Kipling was a writer of wisdom
His stories may now seem dated
But when it comes to Tommy Atkins
Things are still just as he stated
History changes with time
Depending on its writer
For some he was a terrorist
To others a Freedom Fighter.
Time brought respectability
Making him a Political leader
And with that position
Influential power yielder.
Though never ever proven
Involvement in terrorist acts
Quietly glossed over with
Subtle massage of the facts.
The Good Friday Agreement
Brought amnesty for crime
But not for any British troops
Serving there at the time.
Those with blood on their hands
Are able to officially walk free
There's a threat of prosecution
For any retired Veteran like me.
History changes with time
Depending on its writer
They prosecute the ex soldier
But pardon the freedom fighter.
It's not changed since Kipling's day
They love the squaddy in time of war
But in periods of calm and peace
They don't want to know him anymore.
